Earlier this evening I was giving at least cursory thought to my albums of the year list, in the initial mental shuffling I realized that Bodies of Water’s Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink was probably going to be shut out of the top ten, which is a shame considering they contributed one of the best songs and best shows of 2007. Not to be overly simplistic with band to band comparisons, because seriously those people are the worst (OMG, Tapes and Tapes are totally the new Clap Your Hand Say Yeah), but I see a lot of Funeral era Arcade Fire in Bodies of Water; the raw emotion, boy-girl harmonies, swelling vocals, spit shine production and just plain stupid goofiness and enthusiasm. Even the live show, with it’s multitudinous wall of sound, was reminiscent of Arcade Fire. Let’s just hope they don’t fall into the same trap as Win Butler and company, burnishing and hammering their symbolic cymbal until it’s something lifeless, unrecognizable, safe and ultimately boring

victory for the axis of…eh
Interesting thoughts.
I’m not sure what you mean by “symbolic cymbal”. Do you mean AF’s overuse of strong symbolism becomes boring?
Call me old-fashioned but Funeral was their only truly excellent album IMO.

On the subject of Bodies of Water .. i kind of want them to be more amazing than they are. “Under The Pines” is the only song that has knocked my socks off.
